Environmental Commission

Trees in Holland Township contribute importantly to our quality of life. The town has over 7224 acres classified as forest resource, as well many road side and public trees. This plan establishes a five year plan to care for this environmental treasure.
This plan was funded by a state grant. Significant grants are available for plan programs. Money comes from “Treasure Our Trees” license plates, state and federal sources. Click HERE to read more
If you have questions or would like to participate in the plan, speak to an Environmental Commission member.

A program was started to label trees at the Riegel Ridge Community Center and town park. The plaque labels include common and scientific names and a QR code.  The QR code when accessed with a smart phone, or other photo capable device, refers to a website page which contains videos and other information specific to that tree species.  A map page may be selected which has the location of all labeled trees and can be used as a guide to find the next tree. A link to selected reference material is also provided.  All information can be accessed through the QR code on the tree, or from this town website. This will help you plan your visit or review afterward.  In the future more trees and tree information will be added. Click here for Trees of Holland.

Stream Survey along Miller Park Road

Environmental Commission member, Dwight Pederson and AmeriCorps NJ Watershed Ambassador Program representative Fairfax Hutter performed a stream survey along Miller Park Road using a net to collect life from the creek bed. The water surveyed is part of the Harihokake Creek. Lots of aquatic insects were cataloged. Results are shared with the NJ DEP and consulted for permit requests along the stream.dwight

The Holland Township Environmental Commission (EC) and the Hunterdon Land Trust (HLT) recently collaborated on an effort to blaze/color-code trails on approximately 150 acres of preserved land in the Township. The properties are located between Shire Rd. and Andersen Rd., and can be accessed at the Green Acres/“Thomas Saeger Preserve” signs between 150 and 200 Shire Rd—Map shown below.

The network of trails was created, and is maintained, by the Jersey Off-Road Biking Association (JORBA) in cooperation with the HLT. The public is invited to visit the preserved properties and to hike the trails. Just be certain to dress appropriately, and to be careful as you enjoy these unspoiled pieces of our township.

Trees of Holland Township

Holland Township is home to a wide variety of trees. An Environmental Commission initiative is underway to identify various types of trees throughout our publicly accessible land. The trees will be labeled with special signs denoting the type of tree.

We are working to create an interactive map showing where you can find the marked trees. The first set of labeled
trees are on the Riegel Ridge Community Center property.

Here are the current set of trees with our Holland Tree signs. See if you can find each tree.
